Fourth time is a charm!

[Alright people, you know the drill! There is [1] neatly stacked pile of magazines near the entrance of the inn. There is no fangirl in sight! And yes, the newspapers are very free for the taking.]

[ooc; FROM THIS POINT ON, YOU'RE FREE TO HAVE YOUR CHARACTER FIND THEIR SECRET SANTA. You all got my comments, right? If you did not for whatever reason or...forgot your character's secret santa, just IM me or leave an OOC comment and I'll get it to you!]

...fortunate. Miss Izuna and I were spared from "review".

I don't suppose anyone saw who left these here?

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see anyone... but even if there aren't any witnesses, there might be a way to find out who left them!

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have such tools on hand?

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
As a matter of fact, I do!

*ta daaa jar of aluminum powder*

We can use this to find fingerprints!

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's excellent; certainly a better lead than I had hoped to be able to follow. Though we would need to acquire everyone's fingerprints for this to be useful.

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
You're right... we'll need something to compare with. But this'll be a good start!

Do you know how to use this powder?

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Affirmative. It will certainly be better than what we have. Which, presently, is almost nothing.

Negative. I have not handled this equipment before.

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I can walk you through it, then! *handing you a pair a gloves :D*

First, we need to locate the best place to find a clear print.

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
*OH BOY LEARNING. Putting those gloves on 8D-- I mean =|*

Hm. I would assume the front and back covers would be the only logical choices.

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think so, too! And we better use a copy that no one else has thumbed through yet - so we don't accidentally find someone else's prints, or even our own.

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
A very good point, Miss...ah; I do not believe we properly introduced ourselves. I am Sagara Sousuke.

*aaaand using his now-gloved hands to select a fresh copy of the magazine*

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
My name is Ema Skye. It's nice to meet you!

Good! Next, sprinkle some aluminum powder over the print. For best results, dab lightly with the brush and be very careful not to smudge it.

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Likewise.

Affirmative. *sprinkle sprinkle little star...you have never seen someone brush-dabbing so lightly. Literally. It may take hours at this rate.*

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... you can be a little more liberal with the powder. We need to cover the entire print, or it won't work.

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
...ah. My apologies.

*okay, have an actual NORMAL amount of powder...alrighty, this is actually possibly working now--!*

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Good!

Next, just blow off the excess. The powder should stick to the oil traces left by the fingers.

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Understood. So I just... *blows slightly...O HAI THAR FINGERPRINTZ!*

--ah! It seems the effort was a success, Miss Ema.

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
You did it! Good job! Now we just lift the print...

*uses some clear tape to pick up the print, then sticks it on a tiny piece of black paper and hands that to you /o/*

...And we're done! Now you have a perfectly preserved fingerprint of whoever made this magazine!

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
*Accepts it! Is actually smiling! Holy shit progress in the case!*

If I can find a way to obtain fingerprints from the locals, this might just be exactly what I need. Your assistance has proven extremely invaluable, Miss Ema. I believe I owe you one.

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it might be a little tough when we don't have anyone's prints on record. I'd like a collection of those, myself.

It was my pleasure! If you ever want any more scientific help in the future, make sure you come to me!

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...of course, if the subject knows there are people looking for fingerprints, we will need a way of obtaining them inconspicuously.

I will certainly do so. For future reference, what other investigatory tools do you have?

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a few other good techniques for investigating with science, but the only other good tool I have with me is my luminol spray, for finding blood traces. I guess it's only really good for murder investigations.

[identity profile] lambda-driven.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
With any luck, we will not have need for that particular item unless the subject accidentally gives herself a paper cut on the edge of the magazine.

Ah; it is almost certain, by the way, that the culprit is a female. Numerous leads point in that direction.

1/2

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
A girl? I suppose that makes sense... the handwriting looks pretty feminine, too.

[identity profile] reachfortheskye.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
... Oh! That just got me thinking!

Should you fail to get a fingerprint match, another way to identify her is her handwriting! ...But you'd need samples from all the Islanders for that, too.
