Date: 2009-02-16 06:56 am (UTC)[oh dear, you've drawn this on yourself] Well, Valentines is a holiday held on the 14th of February. The holiday has to do with celebrating love, and it's a tradition that dates back to ancient Rome. The details on it are a little fuzzy, but I think there had been some kind of match-making ceremony involving a fire held on the fifteenth.
But anyway, one of the generals of the Roman empire decided to outlaw marriages, because he didn't want his soldiers distracted by romance or women. However, this didn't stop the soldiers from falling in love and writing letters or poems to their sweethearts (this is what begot the writing of notes and giving of cards to loved ones).
Finally, one priest decided enough was enough. His name was Valentine, and he went about marrying everyone who wished to be married. Obviously, when the general found out about this, he was not happy, and ordered Valentine to be killed, and he died on the fourteenth.
I can't quite remember what happens next, but somehow or other, Valentine is named a saint and the match-making ceremony is moved to the day of his death and renamed in honor of him.
Nowadays, on the holiday it's mostly girls who pass out notes and candy and sweets to their loved ones. A month later, on March 14th, the boys recuperate. But that's just the standard and doesn't really have to be followed.
